- According to the latest accident statistics report by the American Boating Association, watercraft-related incidents caused 710 deaths, 3,474 injuries and nearly $44 million in property damage in 2006. These amounts increased from the previous year; therefore, the numbers could be considerably higher this year as people get ready for the sunny summer season and dust off their boats, jet
skis and other watercraft.
"It is alarming how high these numbers are. These statistics help us show our customers why it is so important to have insurance coverage for watercrafts like boats, jet skis, canoes and other recreational vehicles," said Kyle Garst, chief executive officer of Brooke Capital Corporation. "Whether it is for liability, appraisal, or collision, insurance is a must have for your water vehicle. There are many different types of insurance, so it is important to know what plan best suits your needs."
As people get geared up for Memorial Day and summer activities, it's important for them to be properly insured, Garst said. To help them along the way, Garst offers the following considerations for those interested in purchasing a watercraft insurance plan:
-- Got a Fire Extinguisher? - It's critical to keep a fire extinguisher onboard at all times and to inspect it at least once a month to make sure it doesn't have dents, leaks or other signs of damage that could prevent it from working.
-- Water Safety 101 - Taking a water safety class not only keeps you informed about how to keep you and others safe while on the water, it is good information to know in general as a driver of a water vehicle.
-- Follow the Rules - Although it's summertime and many people let loose for fun, it's important to remember that the rules are in place for a reason - to keep you safe and your vehicle protected from damage.
-- Be a Smart Shopper - Be sure to ask around, get references and do your research before finalizing on a plan. Brooke Insurance works with a variety of top insurance companies from which you can choose your plan.
