Dr Riad Salem is Director of Interventional Oncology at Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center , Northwestern Memorial Hospital , Chicago . Over the past seven years, this talented and dedicated interventional radiologist has treated hundreds of patients by offering them innovative therapy with Yttrium 90 microspheres. His particular interests are in the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma, neuroendocrine and colorectal metastases. He has also published extensively on the clinical outcomes following radioembolization. With the use of TheraSphere® and SIRSpheres ®, he offers an option to the limited number of treatments available for patients suffering from primary and secondary liver cancer. This treatment utilizes tiny radioactive microspheres to attack cancerous tumors in the liver, while minimizing the impact on the patient's healthy tissues In general the treatments have low side effects. Patients rarely experience the extreme fatigue, nausea and vomiting that may be associated with chemotherapy. It can usually be administered on an outpatient basis as it does not usually require an overnight hospital stay. Dr. Salem says that this therapy often translates into a positive experience for patients, families, and institutions and that the impact of the microspheres on the tumors seems to be long lasting. In low risk patients, the treatment appears to control the malignancies for extended periods of time.
